This morning I rose with a determination to see Bethel Hill before night so tonight I am stoping to the Bethel House. Looks quite the same as when I attended school here 4 years ago.

Tonight I am at home again. Had a suit of clothes cut and other business done and started for home at twelve oclock.

Sunday 2


A splendid day. Bro. Sprague is with us today to tea. Moses & Lottie are here too.

Monday 3


Signs of a storm tonight. The Reform Club hold a meeting in the Hall tonight. A large attendance.

Monday 10


Sent ten dollars by Bro. Hannaford to deposite in the Auburn Savings Bank.

Thursday 20


Another birthday has come around today. I find myself twenty-fore years old; if time and health continue with me I shall soon be an old man may my life be useful; and not a blank.

Finished hauling dressing on Goulds today put 42 loads on I acre

Am sick today so did not go to church the first sabath I have not attended church for more than one year when at home

Monday 15


Been at work to home today. Broke our cart axle but as we have good neighbors we had one given us so we were soon at it again.

Am some tired to-night the first pleasant day we have had I think since this month came in

A splendid day to day Father sowed one piece of Oats on Gould’s today rather cold and backward for the time of year but grass will soon grow.

Circle over to Wm Marstons tonight but being some tired I thought I would not go. Father has been ploughing for potatoes on the Capt’s today.

Tonight I am setting up with Greenleaf. He is a very sick man some crazy.

Mr. Averill is some better this morning.

A pleasant day. David and I finished up the Spring’s work on Gould’s today being five days later than last year.

Friday 26


Another pleasand day. Have been fixing fence planting the garden setting out trees &c. today. Father and David did Bro. Sprague’s work today. Mr. Pratt (S.W.) was here today.

Saturday 27


What nice weather we are having. Have planted two acres of potatoes today. John Newton and Eliah Averill worked for us today.

Sunday 28


Another Sabath day; a day of rest. Have been to Church all day. Mr. Parsons from Boston preached at five o’clock a splendid discord.

Monday 29


Have planted the corn today rather late but guess the fall will correspond with Spring as usual for we have the promise of seed-time and harvest; always.

Thursday 30


Have been hauling dressing today have got some tired of that kind of work. As we have got out 152 loads this Spring. Sowed our oats today.

Have been planting today. Circle up Mr. Stevens’ tonight but being tired I did not go.

Firs day of Summer and a nice day too. Have been planting potatoes today.

A nice summer day. Finished planting potatoes today. Re. Mr. Kendall is here tonight.

Have been to church today some rainy so But few were out. Bro. Kendall from Newery preached two very good sermons.

Tonight finds us all three on B Hill camping in the old house. Drove up 21 head of cattle to pasture.

Broke the plow today and David has gone to Andover to get it fixed.

Saturday 10


Came home tonight has been some showery today and very warm.

Sunday 11


Mrs. Bigelow and Mrs. Greenleaf Averill were baptized this morning. Arthur Roberts married this evening, rather a singular day.

Monday 12


Tonight finds David and I on the old farm again. Father came up with us but has returned home.

Tuesday 13


Have been ploughing today. Signs of rain but guess it will blow up some dry weather. We got out five loads of dressing making 160 loads in all.

Wednesday 14


Have been plowing all day. Are in hopes to finish the field tommorrow.

Thursday 15


And we have finished it. Has been the warmest afternoon we have had this Summer.

Friday 16


Finished plowing today for this year. We are with Uncle Joe tonight. His family is all well.

Saturday 17


David and I went a fishing today down on the Cambrige river. Caut 81 in all that we brought home threw away some. Left of fishing at three and at seven am at home.

Sunday 18


No services held in our church today untill evening. So went to the other church. A Mr. Philips from Mass. Preached. A very smart man.

Monday 19


Tonight finds me in the old house on the old farm again. Am in hopes to get done here at present this week. Willie Pratt stoped with me tonight.

Tuesday 20


Have been harrowing today has been some rainy so I have not got along as well as I expected to. But will try and make it up tomorrow.

Wednesday 21


Sowed 8 Bu. of grain today. Has rained about every hour.

Thursday 22


Finished the five acre piece tonight and am as tired as I care to be after. Had a very heavy hard storm today at noon.

Friday 23


Finished harrowing in the buck wheat today and came home was glad to get through with the job.

Saturday 24


Quarterly meeting commenced with us today Bros. Gould and Brooks from Upton & Grafton are with us tonight also Uncle Henry and wife with two children and two Mrs. Douglases making in all quite a family but are glad to see them all.



Sunday 25


A beautiful day and have had a beautiful time.Edwin Caldwell was married this morning. The Elder preached an excelent sermonn today and so di Bro. Kendall from Newery; may God bless and prosper them.

Monday 26


A splendid day have been hoeing today on Goulds finished his for the first time. Uncles folks returned home this morning so did the rest of the folks.

Tuesday 27


Pleasant this morning and this evening is raining such is life full of changes. Have been hoeing potatoes at home today. Have got a small troter come along last Saturday.

Wednesday 28


Have been at work on the potatoes today. No new to write.

Thursday 29


Been on the road today all hands to work. Was sorry to hear today of the death of one of my old schoolmates and friend. George Rawson was killed by gass some way have not learned the particulars.

This morning at three o’clock David and myself started for Upton to get the cattle out of the woods found them at last and half past eleven finds us at home willing to retire.

Sunday 2


Have been to church today. Has been a very warm day Went up on to Farmers Hill with Bro. Hannaford to a lecture. The school house was crowded full.

Monday 3


Have been hoeing today been some rainy but has cleared of pleasant for the celebration tomorrow.

Tuesday 4


The one hundreth birthday of our independence as a nation has come and gone just the same as any other day. Have been hoeing today as Andover celebrates with nothing but dances and horse racing.

Saturday 8


Father and mother went to Upton today to see how the cattle are getting along. Also to see the folks; pick strawberries &c.

Sunday 9


Have been to church. Bro. Sprague spoke to us his subject being the three Hebrew worthies. And a most splendid sermon it was too.

Monday 10


Some showery this afternoon and dreadful hot.

Tuesday 11


Another very h0ot day. Father and mother came home from Upton today. Finished hoeing today and have got to commence haying tomorrow if pleasant.

Wednesday 12


Commenced haying today also commenced haying one year ago today. Has been a very hot day being 92 o degrees in the shade but has been a splendid hay day. Hezekiah Hutchins married today.

Thursday 13


Another hot hay day. Got in two loads of hay today. Mr. Farnum Abbott died last night. I understand I have got a second cousin in Upton. Well they are a smart kind of people up there.

Friday 14


Have got four loads of hay out on Goulds all wet through for we had the smartest shower I think I ever saw.

Saturday 15


A splendid hay day got in three loads of hay today. Mr. Leysander Fuller was down today. Father paid him $3.38 in full of all demands against him to date. Got in five loads of hay this week.

Sunday 16


Another splendid day. Have been to church today. Mr. Dunham from Bryan’s Pond preached to us in the evening.

Very lively times here on the account of the election the Democrates claim the victory to night. (Error in Date)

Thursday 20


Has been very hot today 95o in the shade. Finished haying on Gould’s today. Hervey is here tonight, came from Paris today. Paid 2.17 express bill for some scythe heads &c tonight.

Friday 21


A nice hay day today. Hervey commenced work this morning to make out the week.

Saturday 22


Got in five loads of hay today, mowed three. Hervey finished his two days job and I paid him $2.00 which satisfied him. Got in 21 loads of hay this week, making 26 in all.

Sunday 23


Rainy today have been oty church. Rev. Mr. Burbank of Rumford charge preached to us today tow very good sermons.

Thursday 27


Mother is unwell so I went up to Mr. Marston’s and secured her a hired maid hope she well heall right soon.

Saturday 29


Has been a poor week for haying have got eight loads this week making 34 in all Mr. Ezra Jewell was drowned today in Roxbury Pond.

Sunday 30


Have been to church today as usual. Rode over to the pond to see where Mr. Jewell was drowned.

Monday 31


David and I have been on White Cap today after blueberries. Had very good luck.

August



Tuesday 1


A splendid hay day have been down to the corner. There is a circus in the village but I am not there. Have got three loads of hay today.

Wednesday 2


Another splendid had day. Have got in 4 loads of hay today. They succeeded in finding Mr. Jewell’s body today. Having been in the water four days was some disfigured.

Thursday 3


A nice hay day today. Have got in seven big loads of hay today and have got five more out.

Friday 4


Nice hay weather. And we are improving it. Have got in four loads of hay have got five more to get in tomorrow if pleasant.

Saturday 5


Have had a splendid hay week since Monday which was rainy or dull. Have got in 22 loads of hay this week. Am intending to go to Upton next week hope we shall have as good a week there.

Sunday 6


Has been the hotest day we have had for the season; being 110o at eleven o’clock. Rev. Mr. Pearson preached for Bro. H. today.

Monday 7


Commenced my days work at home and eleven o’clock at night finds me with a crew of men in Upton.

Tonight finishes another weeks work and a good one too. Have got in 22 loads of hay this week. Have got in five days work on the hill.

Today I am on the old hill all alone as my crew left yesterday morning worked just today except Lon who lost ½ day.

Lon and I arrived her today at noon. Have got in 4 loads of hay are getting some splendid hay.

Got in tow loads today never seen such hay weather just two weeks every day a hay day.

Another splendid hay day have got up 8 loads of hay today.

Joseph came up and helped me get in all of my hay this afternoon and tonight I am with him intending to go after blueberries tomorrow.

Have been over to the meadows today traveled all day and got nothing. Came back with Joseph.

Am to grand-father’s tonight. Mr. Tiscome and wife are here also.

Monday 28


Have been after blueberries today have got about one Bu. Got out to the old house about ten o’clock and stopped for the night.

Tuesday 29


Have been hunting aftger the cattle today could not find them. Father and mother came up today and are stopping in the old house.

Wednesday 30


Started this morning after berries and found none so came home and went to mowing grass.

Finished haying today have got in 44 loads of hay up here making 195 in all this summer.

Friday 1


Have been after the cattle but could not find them.

Saturday 2


Father has hunted cattle all day and I spent of the day and have found nothing.

Sunday 3


I am stoping in the old house all alone today and tonight. Father and mother have gone home to Andover.

Monday 4


Father came up again today. I have been at work on the grain and hunting cattle today.

Tuesday 5


Father hunted cattle all day nearly and could not find them but as luck would have it we found them tonight after the sun had gone down got them out of the woods all right.

Wednesday 6


Finished cutting the Indian wheat today. Am glad it is finished.

Thursday 7 – 1877


Am tending Camp-meeting at East Livermore. The first Camp-meeting I ever attended. Are enjoying myself very much.

Saturday 23


Finished getting in the grain today and came home with the steers. Am some tired. Paid Mrs. Sewel Pratt 3.20 today leaving .50 cents more due her on her work bill.

Sunday 24


Went up on Farmer’s Hill to a lecture today. Have been to church all day or to every service.

Monday 25


Commenced drying the potatoes. ????? put 17 Bu. in the cellar.

Tuesday 26


Cloudy today. Mr. Pratt and Miller over her to dinner today. Have got 40 Bu. of potatoes up to the house today making 57 Bu. in all.

Wednesday 27


Have been drying potatoes as usual today. G. Averill worked today. Put 30 Bu. more into then cellar making 87 in all.

Thursday 28


A nice day for drying potatoes. Have put 18 Bu. in the cellar making 105 Bu. in all.

Friday 29


Have had a splendid day for laboring men to work. Have put 40 Bu. of potatoes in the cellar today making 145 in all I also have put 80 Bu. into the factory.

Saturday 30


Have had very good luck today four of us have loaded the car four times today put 40 Bu. in the cellar making 185 in all.

October



Sunday 1


Another month has dawned upon us making a good beginning Sunday. Have attended church all day. A beautiful evening as there is a full moon and a clear sky.

Monday 2


Have put 17 Bu. potatoes into the cellar at home today making 202 Bu. in all. Delivered Durand 20 Bu. of potatoes today being what we owed him for fours loads of manure got last Spring.

Thursday 5


Have been to a circle up to Bro ?Ohert’s? had a good attendance and being a splendid evening everybody seemed to enjoy themselves.

Friday 6


A dull day have been carting apples most of the day. Mrs. Farrington and old lady (being 91 years old) was burried today.

Saturday 7


Have been drying potatoes today four of us. We were hoping to finish but as it had been raining the past few days we did not. Have put 160 Bu. into the factory out of the field today. Uncle Wm. Abbot and wife are here tonight are glad to see them.

Sunday 8


Begins to feel some like winter again. Have been to church today.

Monday 9


Finished Mr. Gould’s potatoes today he had 260 Bu. Have been to a lecture at the hall given by Bro. Sprague subject My Visit to the Centennial was very interesting. Sold Mr. West $125.00 worth of stock today.

Tuesday 10

Have been plowing some today. Snowed some here today. Mr. Dresser got home from his centennial tour last night. Winnowed up the beans today had ten bushels.

Friday 13


Finished breaking up on the intervale at home today. Are having some very nice weather for farmers to get their work done; and to get ready for winter.

Monday 16


The thrashers commenced on our Oats today. Received from Bidell $110.00 on the potatoes. Paid A.A. West $100.00 of it. (to Mr. Ripley)

Tuesday 17


Finished the oats today. Had 110 Bu. they were not as good as last year.

Wednesday 18


Have been plowing on Gould’s today have plowed one acre since thebn o’clock and got done in good season.

Thursday 19


Father has been up to the hearing on the Dunn Notch road question. Found Fuller quite well elevated being 750 feet higher that Mr. Mortons in the Surplus. Circle tonight down to Mr. Farnum’s.

Friday 20


Commenced to break up an acre on Gould’s today. Has been a nice day. David went to Upton with Hollis this afternoon.

Saturday 21


Finished breaking up this forenoon are getting along nicely now with our work.

Sunday 22


Have had a splendid day. David came home from Upton today. Have been to church as usual.

Monday 23


Have been at work on Gould’s today. Is raining quite hard tonight. Am most sick with a cold. Am in hope it will be better soon.

Has been some rainy today. Drawed out last load of potatoes to the factory today making 440 Bu. in all or enough to come to $132.00 being very acceptable this year.

Finished drawing dressing on Gould’s today. Having got out twenty five loads on the next years job.

Finished work on Gould’s today have had quite a job this fall.

Have been at work at home today. David has been to Upton to get the cattle got them home all right.

Have been at work for Mr. Newton today. Another month has past away how fast time flies.

November has again made his yearly tour. Stern Winter will soon be upon us to remind us of the shortnest of time.

Some rainy today. Have been to a circle to A. B. Barrett’s this eve. Had a very pleasant time.

Have been plowing today are getting along nicely with our fall work.

Father and mother I sppose are in Upton tonight as they left for there this morning.

A splendid day. Mrs. Moses Cutting died this morning at seven o’clock. Mrs. Bean of Upton was married to a Mr. Chapman of Newry today.

Monday 6


Have been banking up the house today. Father and mother came home tonight.

Tuesday 7


A very storm y day. Today I cast my first vote for a U.S. President. Mrs. Cutting was buried today.

Wednesday 8


The Democrats claim the victory tonight , but we have some hopes yet.

Thursday 9


A splendid day. Have just got home from the Corner. Received on the telegraph news of Hayes election hope it will prove to be true. The high school closed today.

Friday 10


Raining hard tonight. Have been on the road today. (Father and I with one horse.) Uncle Henry and wife with two of their children are with us tonight are glad to see them. Bro. Sprague and Hannaford made us a visit today and evening.

Saturday 11


Rainy and dull. Uncle Henry and family are still with us. Looks a little stormy as to the election, but we still hope right will prevale.

Sunday 12


Have been to church all day. Bro. Sprague preached to us in the same good old way. He and wife also Bro. H. was here to tea this afternoon.

Monday 13


Tonight I am at Upton with Uncle Wm’s Folks. Cold and squally.

Tuesday 14


Came home from Upton today. Find on getting home that it is hard telling who is President. It seems as thought the same old, red hot blood in the South is boiling over again. Hope it will be checked.

Friday 17


Tonight mother and I are in Paris with Uncle Henry folks. We found them all well and at home.

Saturday 18


Today we came to Uncle Jacob Parsons. Found them well and prospering nicely. Signs of a snowstorm hope it will not come untill we get home.

Sunday 19


A very nice day. Tonight finds us at Uncle David’s in North Norway found them all well were glad to see them.

Monday 20


Some hail and snow this morning. We made Uncle Otis Brooks a visit today and came over to Uncle Moses Parson’s to spend the evening and night with them.

Tuesday 21


Started this morning for home. Left two coats with Mrs. S.L. Rawson of South Paris to be made. Are with Uncle Henry’s folks tonight.

Wednesday 22


This morning finds us home all right. Have enjoyed the visit first rate. Have had no snow but good wheeling except some mudy places.

Thursday 23


Have been at work on stone today. Are having nice weather for the time of year. No new to write in regard to the election.

Friday 24


Father and I have been at work on stone work today. David has been to Upton and back with some beans.

Saturday 25


Finished spliting stone today have had good luck considering. This evening I am watching with Mr. Crocker he is getting along nicely.

No preaching at our church today.

Monday 27


Some cold today. Father went to Bryant’s Pond today with some potatoes.

Snowing some from the west tonight. Father got home tonight receved 65 per Bu. for his potatoes. Paid Elbrige Poor 38 on insurance.

Thanksgiving day. Also the last day of the month and no snow on the ground.

Friday 1


Splendid wheeling. Father started with a load of potatoes this morning for Bryant’s Pond. Temperance meeting tonight in the Hall.

Tuesday 5


The Exhibition which came off tonight prooved a success. As the weather was very favorable. Uncle Henry and Cousin Martha are with us tonight are glad to see them.

Wednesday 6


A splendid day. Have been cutting bushes today. No snow but first rate wheeling.

Thursday 7


A splendid day have been cutting bushes. A Circle in the Hall tonight.

Friday 8


Have been to the Temperance Meeting tonight. Eugene Taylor signed the Iron Clad Pledge.

Saturday 9


This afternoon we was favored with one of the fearful squalls from the North west. Some snow but still wheels are in use. Amos Abbott ?hung? (?spring?) himself in Upton today.

Sunday 10


A very cold day. So cold that only five persons were out to church.

Saturday 16


Have been at work in the store for Dresser today. Another rough western squall today.

Sunday 17


Cold and windy only 12 were present to church. The Stage came in this morning on wheels.

Monday 18


Snowed all day about one foot has fallen the first to make sleighing.

Tuesday 19


Went to Upton today. Father and myself. Very cold and snowy.

Friday 22


Father and I came home tonight. Hauled home some straw and one bale of hay.

Saturday 23


Have been to the Surplus today after some grain. Sold it to Dresser for 50 cts per Bu. .25 less than we sold him some last year owning to the hard times I sppose. Classmeeting here tonight two present.

Uncle Henry went home today when I started for Upton.

Came home from Upton today. An aweful windy and snowy time. Have been pressing hay.
