Bob Walters retired from the U.S. Army after 29+ years as Command Sergeant Major of the 555 Combat Engineers. He joined the Ohio National Guard in 1939, which was federalized in January, 1940. During WWII he was a bomber co-pilot with the Army Air Corps. He was shot down near the Germany-Italy border and escaped capture. At the end of the war and immediately thereafter, Bob was assigned to OSS. During the 1960's he was attached to the Tank Automotive Command where he helped in the design of the M1 Tank. He also served in Korea and Vietnam before his retirement.
After leaving the military, he settled in Asheville and took the position of Recreation Director at the youth reformatory in Swannanoa. After his retirement from there, he was an awarded volunteer at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Oteen, where he was instrumental in instituting a rehabilitation and prosthetics program and the hospice program.2 Robert was born at Knoxville, TN, on 23 September 1915.
