Another New year has begun. May I be able to keep all the good resolves which seem to run through my mind. This little book was presented by my dear daughter I suppose with the desire that I fill it.

Cold winter weather but fine sleding. Sleighing and wheeling both.

Fine weather. Have been up in the woods to help fix the road off the hill not snow enough.

14-B Cloudy Good winter weather. Sleighing & automobiling about 6 inches of snow in the woods just enough in the woods to make good going with sleds

0 Snow The first snow storm for over six weeks. About six inches ???? will probably stop wheeling for the winter. The boys did not go into the woods on account of the storm.

0 Wind. Cold cloudy and windy. Have all stayed at home today hear the wind howl and the snow pile up.

14 B Another cold day. The boys have been up in the woods today getting out birch for the spool mill. Am suffering with a bad cold in my head tonight.

12-B Fair. Cold and fair in the forenoon but cloudy in the afternoon and snowing tonight. Got word tonight that Oscar Cutting died this morning in Flint, Mich.

12 – A. cool and windy tonight. Plenty of cold weather this winter. Mattie and Lizzie called on me today.

15 – B Fair. A find day. Have been working on a camp for the boys on their birch job. Mattie Cutting is with me tonight.

17-B. a cold morning but warmed up before noon. Finished the camp today. Makes a good place for the boys to eat their dinner.

4-A. Pleasant. 47 years ago today we came here from Upton, Maine. A great many changes have transpired since then but I am still here.

Thursday 1

18-A. cloudy nearly all day. Went up and got the boys dinner camp this forenoon and boiled sap in the afternoon. Some thief broke into our sap house and stole two Gal. of maple syrup.

30-A. cloudy and some rain with hail and snow tonight.

Saturday 3

28-A. A fine day. The best sap day we have had for years. Went over to East Andover and got a load of sawdust in the forenoon. Boiled sap until midnight.

Sunday 4

26-A. Another sap day. Looks like rain tonight.

Monday 5

30-A. Got up at 3 AM and boiled sap all day. Got through with the chores at 7:30 PM Quite a day for an old man. Rainy tonight.

Tuesday 6

26-A. Have been boiling sap again today. Made six gal. Cold and windy.

Wednesday 7

18-A. Moved some hay today and boiled some sap. Has not run much too cold.

Thursday 8

24-A. Moved a load of hay this forenoon. Boiled sap in the afternoon. Hay is worth $30 per ton in barn.

18-A. Delivered a load of hay to Arthur Clark today. Has been to cold today for sap to run. Mrs. Swett made me a visit today to dinner & supper.

24-A. Boiled sap this P.M. are having another good run of sap. Someone made another raid on our sap house and some more syrup since Thursday night and this morning.

26-A.  Another good sap day. Everything all boiled up with sap to boil tomorrow.

24-A. I got up at half pst two this A.M. and went into the sap woods to boil sap and got through at half past ten to night some tired. Signs of rain tonight.

Has rained all day so sap has not run today or rather so we could have a day off.

Boiled off 9 gal. of maple syrup today.

Have been in the sap woods today. Took off five gallons today.

Another May day. Cold and cloudy. Plowed a piece of ground for early potatoes today. Mrs. Robert Newry sold her household goods at public auction today.

Cold cloudy weather. Hope the sun will shine soon and begin to warm up the ground and start vegetation growing.

Still cold and cloudy. Hailed and rained some today. Took away the banking from the house and fixed some fence.

Tuesday 4

Have been fixing fence again today. Cold as usual. Old Bald Pate is just as white as it was any time in the winter.

Wednesday 5

20-A in the morning. A fine day. Have been hauling manure and trimming apple trees today.

Thursday 6

20-A. A nice day. Fred is with us tonight. Good weather for farming cool and pleasant.

A beautiful day. Went to church today. Mr. Larkin has finished his work as pastor of the Cong. Church in Andover and goes somewhere else. He is a good preacher hard to beat.

Sheridan went to Bethel today with a load of potatoes from there toNorway and brought home a load of furniture for Walter Bailey today with his truck. Cool and squally tonight.

Ned is sick tonight had Dr. Davis come up to see him think he is some better than he was this morning. Sheridan has been to Norwayagain today.

Thursday 13

Had the Dr. again today for Ned (the horse) & think tonight he is some better. Sheridan has been to Norway again today. Elmer Marston died today up to the lake.

Friday 14

Cool and cloudy. Planted our early potatoes and peas today.

Saturday 15

Have been about sick with a cold today but have work all day. Cool and cloudy.

Sunday 16

A nice pleasant day. Had the Dr. this morning and he made me stay in the house and commenced to apply the medicine to me. Am some better tonight. Mrs. Robert Newry died this morning.

Fine and pleasant. Have been in the house all day trying to get over my cold.

Tuesday 18

Another fine day. Am better today so I have done some work around the buildings. Ida is sick with the cold or distemper that I have been having tonight. Had the Dr. for her.

Another beautiful day. Sold 31 ½ Bu. Potatoes for $132.30 some price. They are very scarce. Fred is with us again tonight.

A nice warm day. Have been plowing today for our potatoes. Mrs. Geo. Newton died today.

A little rain today. Planted some more peas to day and hoed some in the garden.

Another fine day. Ida and Sheridan have been to Rumford today. Fred home with them.

Arthur & Kate Roberts made us a visit today. Sheridan took a load of 2 big hogs & 4 veals over to Auburn today with his truck and got back home by five o’clock.

Another anniversary of the day of our national independence has come around. Grant Abbott and family made us a visit today. Was glad to see them.

Some warmer tonight. Dug our early potatoes today and thrashed two loads of grain.

Not much news to write about so have neglected to visit for a few days. Have been cultivating potatoes today.

A fine day. Rode up to the Lake today just for a ride.

Cloudy with a shower at noon. No hay day so have been hoeing. Harrold Hodgdon worked ½ day today.

Commenced haying today. Harrold 1 day.

Wednesday 14

Got in two loads of hay today. Aunt Jessie and little Jane Lillon are with us tonight. Harrold 1 day.

Thursday 15

Have been haying and hoeing today. Another little grandson born today. Homer’s third boy may they be spared (?) to them and prove to be a blessing in their declining years.

Friday 16

A good hay day. Cousin Minnie (Richards) Wallin was laid away in her final resting place today.

Saturday 17

Have been haying today. Cleaned up to the scythe nine loads.

A fair day with signs of rain tonight.

Rained all the forenoon. Cleared away at noon. Have been hoeing in the garden.

Have been up to the Sawyer Dam and also up to the Balsam’s today for a ride. Aunt Jessie went with us.

A fine hay day. Have got in four loads today. Fred is with us tonight.

Dull weather all day but signs of good day tomorrow. A slow week have got only 4 loads this week.

A nice day. E rode out to Bethel this PM to see my cousin Wilma (Brooks) Heywood. Came home by way of Lock’s Mills and Hanover. A nice ride. A fine road from Bethel to Lock’s.

Pleasant day got 3 loads today. George Abbott died today.

Good hay weather. Got four loads today.

Got in four loads today. The spool mill got on fire today. Burnt off the roof of the sawdust shed.

Mr. Girth took supper with us tonight. Went over to hear Mr. Miller evening. Has been a beautiful day.

Mrs. Geo. Abbott was buried this A.M. not a very good hay day. Got two loads today.

Tuesday 3

Rather a poor hay day no rain but cloudy. Got in one load.

Wednesday 4

A fine hay day. Got in five loads today.

Thursday 5

Another good hay day. Put in five loads of hay again today.

Friday 6

A nice day and we have improved it. Got in 6 loads.

Saturday 7

Another hay day. Put in 4 good loads today. Making 23 loads this week or 50 in all with two more to get.

Sunday 8

Another hot dry day. Went to church today. The religious interest inAndover seems to be low compared with what it used to be.

Monday 9

A very hot day. Got in one load of hay today.

Cloudy with some rain. Finished mowing over field to with the hand scythe.

Cloudy and dull. Have been pulling weeds in the garden a part of the time. This evening we have been up to the weding reception at Lewis Akers’ for his daughter Effie and Eilon Merrill.

Another dull day with frequent showers. Have been fixing up the thrashing shed for business when the grain comes in next week.

Friday 13

Another dull day. Harold has been harrowing what time he could get between the showers. Olney Farrington Mill burned early this morning.

Dull, dull, dullest. A rainy day. Fred and Mattie have been to Rumford today.

Clouds with some signs of clearing up. Have been harrowing and mowing oats today.

Finished haying today. Had 52 loads. Got in one load of hay and mowed a few oats.

A poor day today hay or grain not much sunshine. Went to Pomonagrange today. Had a good attendance and a good time.

Raining tonight. Went to church today. He talked well but not much life in it to cause the people to stop and think on the results of their manner of living.

Have been to Rumford again today. Saw an airplane for the first time today.

A fine day. Have been thrashing grain and got in three loads of our own.

A cool windy day. Have working on the potatoes today. Edna Hoyt rented the Parsonage stand of me for ten dollars per month.

A pleasant day. Ida went to Lewiston today with Homer and his family. Sheridan’s new Tractor came today.

Have been diging potatoes all the week as we could with other things that have come up to attend to.

Has been a warm beautiful day. Mrs. Henry Swett is very poorly today.

A fine day. Little Burton got run over by Norman Crossman this A.M. with a bycicle and hurt quite badly.

Rained last night. I have been diging potatoes today with a hand hoe all alone a slow job.

Mrs. Swett died today. She has been in poor health all summer. She has been one of our esteemed neighbors and friend for a number of years.

A splendid day. We attended church today.

Cloudy & damp all day but no rain. Mrs. Swett was buried today. She was 72 years old. Sheridan’s thirty-first birthday today.

A very windy day. Have been diging potatoes today. Shall be glad when they are all dug.

Monday 1

Rained all the A.M. 48 years ago today my father bought our home from Mr. Asa West. We came here the next March and I have been here ever since and the time seems short too.

Tuesday 2

Another rainy day after a cold night. The first frozen ground this morning for this fall. Have had a very warm month for Oct. The grass has held fresh and green up to now.

Wednesday 3

Another Republican victory. Hope the change will be for the best.

Thursday 4

Has been a fine warm day for the time of year. Have been shingling on the hen house today.

Finished the hen house job today.

Monday 8

The ground was white with snow this morning. Our first carpet of snow for the fall. All gone tonight.

A cool day. I have been working on the house today.

A cold windy day. Have been fixing the place for the cattle to go out of the barn into the yard. Quite a job too.

Cleared off cold and windy tonight. Laid some roofing on the house today. Sheridan has been to Norway with his truck today.

About six inches of snow this morning. Cloudy and mild all day. Lizzie and Harry are with us tonight.

Stormed all day hail and snow. I hear the spool mill is going to run only five days a week.

Another Thanksgiving Day. Cloudy and warm.

Warm and lowery. Sheridan has been up to the Lake today with his Auto.

A mild day. Have been fixing a sled for yarding with today. Sheridanhas been to Rumford today with his truck – hauled up 3000 lbs on a sled.

Some rain today. Have been up with Sheridan to help him get started in on his birch job. Got 2 loads off the hill.

A mild windy day. Have been fixing the sled for Sheridan to haul birch on.

A mild winter day. Mattie commenced to keep house by herself today.

Have been in the woods today. I saw a large flock of crows, about 50 of them I should say. Something unusual for this time of year.
