Thursday 1




Another new year has dawned up us. Has been a fine day. Have delivered a laod of hay on Black Brook. Quarterly Meeting commenced this evening at our Church.

Friday 2


Our Quarterly Meeting closed today. Father del. Another load of hay on Black Brook.

Saturday 3


Have been to Upton today. The Teacher boards at the hotel the rest of the term at a cost of 2.50 Per Week to the Dis. I was notified of the change last night Friday.

Saturday 10


Have been drawing hay all the past week. Drawed home 8 bales in one load today.

Sunday 11


Has been a splendid day. Henry Dunn's oldest boy was buried today.

Monday 12


Have been to Upton today. Drawed home 7 bales of Hay and 4 Bu. of Buck-W.

Wednesday 14


Have been up to Morrison's Camp today with a load of straw. Has been a nice pleasant day.

Thursday 15


Have not been doing much today. Went up to Simon Learned's and got a load of wood. This Morning we found a little sheep added to our flock.

Friday 16


Tonight finds me stoping n the old house on B Hill all alone. Came upt today. Have been swamping a road into the woods for some Cedar this afternoon.

Saturday 17


Got out three loads of Cedar this forenoon. And came home with the last load of hay this afternoon.

Monday 19


Am on B Hill tonight all alone seems some lonesome. But the weather is very mild so by keeping a good fire I can manage to keep warm.

Tuesday 20


Came home from Upton today in a blinding snowstorm. Drawed home a load of cedar.

Thursday 22


Moved the hay-press over to Mr. Horton's today to press some hay over there. Snowing tonight.

Friday 23


Have bee pressing hay for to Mr. Horton's today. Has been a warm day.

Saturday 24


Have been up to the Carry today. Had the hardest crust to break from Mr. Talbott's to Smiths Mill yard that I ever tried to draw a load through.

Monday 26


A beautiful day today. Have been pressing hay this afternoon.

Tuesday 27


Have been up to the camp today and got a load of Dressing. Raining tonight. Miss Millie Rawson made us a call tonight.

Wednesday 28


Am stoping in the old house on the old farm in Upton. Signs tonight of a freeze up.

Thursday 29


And sure enough everything is froze up this morning. Came home this afternoon with a load of logs.

Friday 30


Have not been doing much today went up to Mr. Learned's and got a load of wood.

Saturday 31


Have been choping wood today. Father went up to the Camp with some hay and straw. Had some rain last night.

Snowing today. Have not been to Church Mr. Joseph Reed burried one of his deauters today.

Monday 2


Have been up and got a load of wood today. Has been a pleasant but very cold day.

Tuesday 3


Have been up on Black Brook today to camp. Has been a very cold stormy day.

Wednesday 4


A blowy snowy day so have been at home today.

Thursday 5


Ida and I have been up to Eli Cuttings today. he and I took a tramp up into the woods to find some spruce to draw for boards.

Friday 6


Father and I have been up in the woods to day and got a load of logs got 4 has been a nice day.

Saturday 7


Have been up and got another load of Spruce. Has been some snowy. David came home tonight to stop over Sunday.

Sunday 8


A beautiful day and a day of rest; but how many seem to regard it as a day of sleigh riding. Lizzie came up from church and took dinner with us.

Monday 9


Have been to Upton and back today. has been a very cold windy day. Tiped over my load of straw in front of Fullers house. And the wind blowed so hard I had to leave it.

Tuesday 10


Father went up to the camp today and I thought I would take a walk with Homer so we started out and at noon we were up to Thurston's Camp. Has been a cold raw day.

Wednesday 11


Have been up to the camp today. Has been a nice pleasant day. Snowed some last night.

Thursday 12


Have been pressing Hay today is very warm tonight. Have got a load of potatoes prepared to start for Bethel tomorrow if favorable.

Friday 13


Has been a warm nice day. Father started for Bethel at two o'clock this morning with the potatoes. I have been up in the woods to prepare a load of Spruce.

Saturday 14


Has been warm all day but is freezing some tonight. Father got home from Bethel tonight got .35 cts. for his potatoes.

Sunday 15


A beautiful day. Mr. Wm Marston is very sick to day.

Monday 16


Father went to the camp today. A new boss got along last night in the barn I mean. Mr. Marston died last night.

Tuesday 17


Has been a pleasant day. I have been up to Smith's Mill with a load of hay. Mr. Wm. Marston buried today.

Wednesday 18


Father started for Bethel this morning with a load of potatoes. Mr. Carr helped me press one ton of hay today.

Thursday 19


Have been pressing hay today. father returned from Bethel with 48 Bu. of corn.

Friday 20


Father has been up to Smith's Mill with his load of corn today for the Morrison's.

Saturday 21


I have been at work on a sheep rack at home. Father has been up to My Camp with a load of hay.

Sunday 22


Has been a splendid day attended church today. David & Lizzie gave us a call tonight. Ida is sick with a cold.

Monday 23


David helped me presse hay today.

Tuesday 24


Have been pressing hay today finished up over to Mr. Hooton's pressed about 10 tons.

Wednesday 25


Father has been up to the camp today. I have made a sheep rack today. (Father's birth-day 54) Has been a beautiful day.

Thursday 26


Has been a warm pleasant day. A splendid evening for the Antiquarian supper for the benefit of Bro. Brown. Should liked to have been there but could not.

Friday 27


I have been pressing hay alone today pressed out six bales besides doing the chores. Father had been up to Morrison's camp today.

Monday 1




Father has been up to Harmon's camp with a load of hay; I have been at work around home.

I have been up drawing spruce for Eli Cutting today drawed down 12 trees.

Wednesday 3


Have been in the woods today to work drawed down 6 trees. Signs of a rain storm tonight.

Thursday 4


Have been loging today has been a warm soft day got down four trees and three logs home.

Friday 5


A rainy day so have been at home all day. Nothing new to write.

Saturday 6


Have been loging again today got 11 trees down off the mountain today. Have been to the first political caucus tonight I ever attended.

Sunday 7


Signs of a storm today. David came home this afternoon.

Monday 8


Our Town Meeting took place today. The Greenbackers mostly have changed their name to gone-backers. Elected Rep. officers all at firs ballot.

Saturday 13


Have been drawing spruce the past week for Eli, have had the best week for logers we have had for the Winter.

Sunday 14


A stormy Sabbath so but few wer out to church. Mrs. Edwin Poor was buried today.

Monday 15


Father has been up to Harmon's Camp with a load of hay. I have been cuting wood.

Have been drawing wood for the next year preacher today.

Have been drawing wood all the week. Sleding has been good so far this month.

Father has been up to the camp with a load of hay today. signs of a snow storm tonight.

Father has been to Newry after some corn has been a windy snow day.

I have been drawing wood today. Cold and windy.

Another cold windy day have been drawing wood Mr. Morrison paid us the bal. of his Acct. today and we paid Mr. West $150.00 on farm.

A nice warm day went up and got one load of wood this forenoon guess it is the last load from Eli's have got 16 loads from there.

A nice day. The Conj folks had a S.S. Concert tonight.

A cold cloudy day. Have been at work on the wood today.

A pleasant day. Father has been up to the camp with our last load of hay for this Winter. Have pressed and delivered 34 Tons this Winter.

Wednesday 31


Have been geting ready for Sugaring taped a few trees today but it has been too cold and windy for sap to flow. Cyrus Sellew is very sick.

Thursday 1




Ha! Ha! another day has come For all fools to dance and hum. A beautiful day. Wagons are out begins to look like signs of Summer again.

Friday 2


Have been at work on the wood today. have got a good steady job of it. David came home today has finished work with Mr. West scaling.

Saturday 3


Has been a cold rainy day. Mrs. Wood died this morning. Had our District School Meeting tonight. Choose C.E. Cushman Agent and the writer was chosen Clerk for the coming year.

A warm Spring day.

Monday 5


Colder today. commenced on our wood pile in earnest today. Hollis Abbott is stoping with us tonight.

Tuesday 6


A cold windy day Cyrus died today another one of our young men snatched from active life to Eternity. Sad indeed for his wife.

Wednesday 7


A very cold day for the time of year. So cold that sap will not run in the middle of the day.

Thursday 8


Some warmer today. Cyrus was buried today. Is it possible we shall never see him busy behind the counter again.

Friday 9


A good sap day today. no news to write I believe Father went up to Mr. Akers' and got two little swine to day.

Saturday 10


Another good sap day. Have had as much as I wanted to do to gather it as fast as it run. Have been at work on the wood all week.

Sunday 11


Another cold spell has begun today. Windy & cold Bro. Brown preached his farewell sermon today. He has been with us 3 years.

Monday 12


Have been at work on our wood mean to try and finish it this week.

Tuesday 13


Are having quite a good run of sap this week. Homer was here to tea.

The same old story to write tonight have been busily engaged with our wood pile today.

Another aniversary of the death of our beloved President Lincoln has come. It hardly seems possible that it has been fifteen years since the assassin's bulit laid him low but it has may his memory never be forgoton.

Mr. French has sold his store to Capt. Gould and he has let or sold it to Frank Dresser & Mills who are going to moove in and trade.

Saturday 17


Has been a cold snowy day. Have got our wood all cut but not quite all split and in the shed. Should finished today if it had not stormed.

Sunday 18


Has been a pleasant day today. no preaching in our church so we have been at home all day seemed some as it used to when we lived to Upton.

Monday 19


Has been quite a pleasant day. Signs tonight of a rain storm. I have gathered 60 Gal. Of sap today and brought it to the house to boil it into honey.

Tuesday 20


In looking at the above date I am reminded that I am 28 years old. It hardly seems possible; times flies so rapidly.

Tonight we were made glad the birth of a little son. May the Loard teach us how to train him up to a full man in Christ Jesus. --- A nice pleasant day.

Another beautiful day. Ida seems to be gaining nicely. Her aunt Abigail is with her tonight.

Pleasant weather indeed. The river drivers are anxious for rain.

Signs tonight of some rain. Mr. Pearson preached for us today. Mr. Gordon was chosen Supt. for the Sabbath School.

A rainy night tonight. The Methodists had their enterment at the Town Hall tonight.

Has been quite a pleasant day. Mr. Sprague preached today. the first time I have been to church for some time.

Have been getting out dressing out on Gould's today. father has plowed the oats on the Capt's.

Sowed the Capt's wheat today.

Finished harrowing in the Capts wheat. Has been a warm day.

Thursday 6


Finished drawing dressing on the Capt's today. david quit work up to the mill today has been there 7 ½ days.

Ida and the baby are getting along nicely.

Another weeks work is done. David has worked 10 day thus far.

Sunday 9


A beautiful day. Our new minister Mr. Green preached today.

Have been busy all the week farming has been a pleasant week. Have sowed six Bu. of wheat a 14 Bu. of oats. Have had but one rain this spring. The river drivers are all hung up to dry.

Has been a beautiful day. Have been getting our pleasant spring weather all at once.

Monday 17


Have been getting our ground ready for planing today.

Tuesday 18


Commenced to plant our potatoes today. have had a cold East wind all day.

Wednesday 19


A beautiful day the wind came round with a shower last night which was much needed.

Finished plantign our potatoes today. The large piece shall plant a few more.

Mr. Green preached again for us today. He intends to stop with us the society the coming year.

Another beautiful day. We are getting along well with our work.

Finished planting our corn today. Have planted one acre.

Have finished plowing and harrowing at home except the bean groung.

Thursday 27


Tonight finds David and I on B Hill. Drove up 15 head of cattle to pasture. The grass is looking well in the pasture.

David has been plowing and I have been fixing fence.

Saturday 29


Came home from Upton today. Found the folks all well.

The first rainy Sabath we have had for a long time in fact the first rainy day.

Came up to the old farm today to finish our springs work here and to cut it short I have let the Indian wheat field to J. Eagles for one half of the crop.

Finished fixing the fence and came home today.

Friday 4


Have been planting the beans today and watching the corn to keep away the crows.

Saturday 5


Went down to the corn piece this morning and shot one of the black pullers and tied him to a pole for a scarecrow.

Sunday 6


Bro. Green preached a good sermon to us today. He came up to take tea with us.

Monday 7


A rainy day. Have been at work some on the sheep house.

Father and Mother started for Upton today.

Finished cutting the grass on Mr. Gould's today or rather finished getting in the hay on his farm. He had 20 good big loads of hay.

Opened all the hay I have cut the past week to try and get it in but had a shower directly after dinner which hindered me from getting in any.

A splendid hay day but I had to to go home with Ida to have some teeth extracted. Finished mowing with the machine at home today.

We came back on to the old place today.

Has been a rainy day so we have not been at work the first day we have lost since coming up here.

Finished haying with the crew today. Have got one more load to get. Have not got so much as usual. Eddie has worked 8 days Pratt 8 ½ days.

Have been over to Uncle Joe's today. Mr. Carlton Hutchins & Wife came up to see us today.

Finished haying today got in my last load just before a shower.

Tuesday 10


Went over to Mr. Foy's and took dinner. Then over to Aunt May's to stop all night.

Have been up on old Bald Pate after berries got two pales full and got home before sun sett am down to Uncle Joseph's tonight.

Have been up on to the mountain again today am some tired tonight. We are stoping with Uncle William's folks tonight.

Caught a mess of Pickerel this morning came up and took dinner with George and tonight finds at home in Andover all right.

Have plowed some today. Never saw the ground so dry before.

Cut the Capts oats today and commenced on the wheat. Mrs. Merrill Hewey died this afternoon.

Has been some rainy today the first rainy day we have had for a long time. Have had the severest drought that the old men ever saw.

Have been to Upton today after the cart has been a beautiful day.

Has been pleasant today. Bro. Green preached a good sermon from 1 Peter subject; Prayer. Our congregations are small. May God remember us in mercy.

Another State Election has come around. This Town Andover polled 206 votes 129 for Davis and 77 for Plaisted the fusionist.

Our drought has brook with a rainy day.

Wednesday 15


Another rainy day. Report came tonight of no choice by the people but that Davis would probably be elected Governor.

Thursday 16


Put 40 Bu. of potatoes in the cellar today on first load this fall has been a cold cloudy day. Mr. Franklin Poor died this morning.

Finished drying one piece of potatoes of 80 Bu. Mr. Franklin Poor buried today.

Have had a new preacher today Mr. Rue from Sumner he preached a good sermon.

Finished drying another piece of potatoes today. Have dry 140 Bu. thus far.

Has been a cold day. Have been to a circle down to the hall tonight.

Quarterly meeting commenced with us tonight. The P.E, Bro. Mason & his wife are with us tonight.

Have had the pleasure of listening to two excelent sermons by our P.E. today. He and his better half are stoping with us tonight.

Have been to Upton and got 26 loads of Bu. of Indian wheat today. Started this morning at five o'clock and got home at 8 [o'clock].

Has been a nice day have dug 262 Bu. potatoes in all. Our crop is very small this year.

Having been diging potatoes the past week.

Finished diging the Capts potatoes today he raised 187 Bu. from less that one acre a good crop for the season.

Finished diging our potatoes at home today. We raised about 400 Bu. this year. Mr. Pratt is here tonight.

A cloudy cool day. Bought a steer of Mr. West today for ten dollars and paid him 2 dollars down.

Finished work on the Capts farm for this year.

A cold day. The first snow for this fall fell today.

Another Presidential Election has come. Th eRepublicans cast 123 vots for Garfield the opposition 88 votes.

Good news tonight Mr. Garefield stands a good sight to be our next President. We are having nice weather to do up farm work.

Finished working the Mill today have worked 6 ½ days.

This morning we awoke to find eight inches of snow on the ground and a cold windy morning.

Another cold day went down to Mr. Poor's and paid a part of our tax today.
